Choosing the Right Size Garage

Building a garage is an exciting project. One of the best things about garages is their flexibility – so many things are possible in this kind of space, and your imagination is really the limit for how the garage can be used.  

Well, that’s not entirely true. In addition to your imagination, the size of the garage is also a limiting factor. If your garage isn’t big enough for what you have in mind, you’ll simply be out of luck. So, picking the right garage size when building a new structure is an important step, and we’d like to help you with that below.

Basic Garage Sizing Options 

The great thing about buying your garage from Carport Kingdom is that you won’t be stuck with any specific stock dimensions – you’ll be able to customize the structure to suit your needs perfectly. With that said, it is still helpful to look at some basic dimensions that are commonly used for garages, so you can adjust from those starting points, as necessary.  

Often, garages are referred to in car sizes, such as “one-car”, “two-car”, etc. But what does that mean in terms of actual dimensions? While it can vary a bit from one to the next, a single-car garage usually comes in at around 12’ x 22’. That 22’ length doesn’t change when you start to add cars, but the width does go up to 24’ for a two-car garage and to 36’ for a three-car garage.  

It’s important to understand that these are just guidelines, and not all cars are the same size. For example, if you have some trucks that you are going to need to park in this garage, you’ll certainly want to go with bigger dimensions than what was listed above, as you’d struggle to park three trucks effectively – and comfortably – in a garage that is sized for three cars.  

A Garage Needs Extra Storage Space

Using the car framework is helpful to get your mind around how big your garage is going to be, but it’s far from the ending point for this process. You’ll want to think about not just parking, but also other uses that you have in mind for the garage, such as storage or working on projects. In fact, you might not be planning on parking anything at all in the garage – this could just be a space to get work done and store things that don’t fit or belong in your house.  

This is where you will always want to error on the side of having a little too much space as opposed to not enough. If your property allows for it, making your garage a bit bigger than you think you’ll need won’t add significantly to the cost, but it will make the building far more useful. Also, with more space available, the garage will be more flexible in the future if your needs change in ways that you don’t expect.  

Garage Door – or Doors 

Don’t forget to give the door component of your garage some careful consideration, as well. The primary attention is usually paid to the roll-up door or doors at the front of the building, as this is how cars are going to get in and out. Always make sure this door is big enough for the vehicles that you’ll be bringing inside and give yourself some room to spare with that door so that parking isn’t a stressful event.  

It might also be useful to add a walk-in door to the design of your garage. This is a nice feature because it means you won’t have to open the big roll-up door each time you want to come or go, so you can keep more of the weather conditions on the outside. If you think you’ll be actively using the garage on a regular basis and coming and going regularly, a walk-in door is an essential addition.
