Having a carport available to serve as a home base for your RV is a great luxury. With a roof over the top of the RV at all times when it isn’t in use, you’ll be protecting the rig nicely, and it will be far more likely to remain in good condition for years ahead.

Sizing an RV Carport
Building a new RV carport on your property isn’t going to do you any good if your RV doesn’t actually fit under the carport. So, this is the first point to concern yourself with in the process. Specifically, be sure to confirm the height of your RV and then design a carport that is going to be tall enough – with a little bit of margin for error – so your rig can come and go without any trouble. You might even want to make sure the carport is tall enough to allow you to do some maintenance on the roof of the RV while it is parked underneath.
The width of your carport should be sufficient to allow you to easily walk around the RV when it is parked, as well. If possible, consider making it wide enough that you will be able to extend any slide-outs you may have on the RV while it is under the carport. That would be ideal for convenience and for working inside and outside of the rig.
Carport Walls Are an Option
If you are picturing a structure with only a roof and some legs when you think about what a carport is, that’s certainly one version – but it’s not the only option. This addition can make a big difference in how the carport performs, so you’ll want to think about whether or not it’s a good feature for your needs.
Adding at least one wall is a great way to protect from the prevailing weather patterns in your area. For example, if you know that the weather in your area tends to come out of the west, you could add a wall on that side of the carport to block the rain, snow, and wind from pounding on your RV throughout the year. This way, you’ll end up with some of the protection that would come from a full garage, yet the building will be more affordable than a garage, and you will have easy access to it from the other three sides.
Make Carport Access Easy
In the design process, don’t forget that you are going to need a comfortable path to get the RV in and out of the carport. The whole point of having a carport for your RV, after all, is to be able to use it as often as you can. So, position the new carport in such a way on your property that it is easy to move into position and then get back out to the road again when the time comes for another trip.
The best possible driveway for an RV carport is one that is as straight as you can make it. RVs don’t tend to turn very effectively, given their size, so you’d rather not need to make any sharp corners on your way into or out of the RV. If you spend some time looking at the layout of your property and what options you have for positioning the carport, you should be able to find a spot that will be as convenient as possible.
