Six Tips to Keep Your Shed Organized
Few things can help organize your property like a shed. At Carport Kingdom, we are proud to offer sheds as one of many different types of metal structures we have available. As much as we love sheds, we do have to admit that they are only useful when properly organized. If you allow your shed – new or old – to fall into a messy state, it won’t provide you with the functional storage space that you so badly need.
The goal of this article is to help you avoid such a disappointing outcome. We want you to get the best possible performance out of your shed, and that means keeping it as organized as possible. Your organizational plan will depend on what you are going to store and how much space you have available, but these tips should help get you started.

#1 – Have a Purpose
The fastest way to waste your shed space is to consider it a “catch-all” area where you can toss things that don’t have another home. Avoid this fate by deciding from the start what your shed is going to contain. It can have more than one purpose – it might be used for holding lawn tools as well as outdoor games, for example – but make sure those purposes are clear and don’t let other stuff crowd up the space.
#2 – Avoid Piles
Even if you put the right things in your shed, the space still won’t be organized if you just pile it all up on the floor. Be strategic with how you place things into the shed, remembering that you will want to be able to get those items back out as easily as possible. Even some basic free-standing shelves could go a long way toward keeping things neat and tidy in the space.
#3 – Gather Small Items
You could spend hours in your shed looking for the right tools or parts if you just let those things roam free. Try using small plastic buckets or some other system of collecting these items all in a single place. For instance, you could have a small bucket for the hand tools you use in the garden, such as a small shovel and rake. You won’t have to spend very much money on this organizational system, and it could save you a lot of time in the long run.
#4 – Create a No-Stuff Space
There are few things as frustrating as needing to retrieve something from your shed only to find that you can’t even step inside to grab what you need. Try marking out a spot on the floor where you aren’t allowed to place anything – this will ensure that a spot always stays open to allow you to walk in and find your things. Not only will this plan keep a space open inside the shed, but it will also force you to be more strategic when you put things away.
#5 – Roll-Out Storage
This tip is particularly useful for the avid gardener. Consider storing all your commonly used tools in a small cart of some kind. That cart can be rolled into the shed when not in use and rolled right back out again when it’s time to plant, weed, or do anything else in the garden. This technique will keep your things in the shed organized in a central location and will allow you to take those tools with you out to wherever they are needed. You can easily find garden carts for modest prices, or you may be able to use a wheelbarrow that you already own.
#6 – Label Your Containers
If you use large plastic containers to hold things that are stored in your shed, make it a point to label each of them in as much detail as possible. Rather than just writing “garden stuff” on the side, take the time to list out a few of the key items that have been placed in the box. This additional detail will take very little time, but it will save you a lot of work when you venture into the shed to find one specific thing.
Organization Will Set You Free
You don’t want to spend your time dealing with organizational tasks – you want to be gardening, woodworking, or whatever else it is you love to do with the tools stored in your shed. Consider these tips to keep your shed organized, so you’ll be free to spend more time on your favorite hobbies than ever before.
