Workshop Organization to Conquer the Chaos
There is no way to know how many workshops across the country are constantly in a state of chaos, but it’s likely in the millions. For many people, the workshop becomes a place to just dump tools and projects. While it can work for this type of storage, letting a workshop become a cluttered mess is a bit of a shame – there is so much more that can be accomplished in a workshop if you are able to keep it neat and tidy.
So that’s the topic that we will tackle below. Let’s go over some workshop concepts to help you get and stay organized so you can use your workshop regularly and safely. Of course, if you happen to need a new garage on your property, Carport Kingdom is here to help with that exciting project. Workshop Organization Steps to Conquer the Chaos
Step 1. Start with a Clean Slate
The best clean slate is to build a beautiful custom workshop from scratch as you can truly plan how the space will work and avoid a lot of stress that comes with trying to make a space work when it doesn’t. But if you already have a custom workshop and want it organized, removing all clutter is your first step.
Once the space is empty, take the opportunity to clean the area thoroughly. Sweep the floors, dust the shelves, and wipe down surfaces. A clean environment sets the stage for effective organization and helps you visualize the potential of your workshop. While the space is empty, consider making any necessary repairs or improvements, such as painting walls, installing better lighting, or adding insulation.
Step 2. Divide the Workshop into Zones
Divide up the things you use and store in your garage into categories. This should be pretty easy to do once you get started – you probably have tools and supplies for a few different types of work. Physically divide these groups up in the garage so you can see how much space they take up and what kinds of items are included in each group. Then, you can start to work out storage solutions for each category of items and give them a dedicated space in the shop.
Going through this process is also a good time to cut down on how many things you own or keep in the shop. There is likely some excess in place currently that could be trimmed down to make your storage requirements a little less significant.
Step 3. Buy–or Build–the Right Storage Solutions
It’s at this point that you are going to need to start working on some storage solutions. You should have a good understanding now of what things you need to store, and where you want them to go, so picking out the right storage should be pretty straightforward.
You can certainly choose to purchase your storage options, and that might prove to be the easiest and most practical solution. However, if you happen to be into woodworking, it could make more sense to build your storage instead. That would allow you to completely customize the dimensions of the storage to fit the space, and you may save some money along the way.
Step 4. Labels Are Your Friend
Even if you are careful about how you put things away in your shop, it’s inevitable that you will forget where you have put at least some of the items. This is why using labels is so helpful – you will quickly be able to scan around the space, find the label that marks what you need, and move on. No more hunting through cabinets and drawers to find what you need. A quality label maker won’t cost much money and is an investment that will continue to pay off for many years ahead.
Step 5. Do a Periodic Review
The way you organize your shop today might not continue to work out for your needs over the many years ahead. So make it a point to review your layout and your storage solutions from time to time – once per year is probably a good interval – and make some corrections as necessary. This type of ongoing review should prevent you from needing to completely overhaul your workshop organization since you’ll be making subtle tweaks along the way to keep things on track.
Build a Custom Workshop
It might take a bit of upfront work to get your garage under control once again, but that effort will be more than worth it in the end. Soon enough, you’ll be able to use your garage as a workshop without having to wade through piles of stuff to get where you want to go. Good luck with this project and reach out to Carport Kingdom when you are ready to build a new metal workshop!
